The next series of RF lenses is the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L. The Canon RF 50mm f /1.2 USM L lens is a standard prime lens. This lens is very fast for Canon’s new EOS R frameless mirror system. Previously, years of using the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L had been in the ranks of DSLR lenses.
However, unlike DSLR lenses, the 50mm f/1.2 USM L RF has been completely redesigned which features no less than 3 aspherical elements and one UD element. The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L is part of the Canon L series, so it’s not surprising that the lens is built to professional standards.
What is the performance and shape of this lens? Following reviews about the Canon RF 50mm f / 1.2 USM L.
Body Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L lens is made of a combination of high quality metal and plastic components based on the holder. This prime lens has a diameter of 89.8 mm, weighs 950g and measures almost 11cm. This lens is also classified as a large prime lens.
So that makes this lens heavier than its predecessor Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L. lens. However, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L lens has a convincing weight in the hand. Canon designs this lens to withstand weather that protects against dust and moisture. Furthermore, a quick look behind the lens shows a large rubber gasket around the metal bayonet holder.
Lens Control Ring as a New Feature
Similar to other RF lens lines, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L also features a Lens Control Ring. Lens Control Ring is a new feature on RF series lenses. Lens Control Ring at the end of the lens barrel. Its function is to control certain main camera settings.
In addition, this control ring can be adjusted via the camera menu. This allows you to quickly access various settings. Including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation. The control ring clicks when playing, which is useful for knowing how many 1/3 of your stops, but note that it is heard when recording sound through the camera.
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens has a generous sized focus ring with a rubber banded grip band. There are no hard stops at both ends of the range, so it is more difficult to set focus at infinity.
The focus ring operates smoothly. In addition Canon inserts a secondary control ring on the front of the lens. It can be configured to various functions such as eg. exposure compensation or aperture control – and even clicked.

Features of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L is equipped with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.2. In addition, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L also features a fast and accurate Canon USM Ring focus motor. The next feature is the ring type Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) AF system.
Thus, it provides silent autofocusing focusing, 10 round diaphragm blades for smoother bokeh, close focus distance of 40cm, configurable control rings, and weather-resistant construction.
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM has two switches that adorn the sides of the lens barrel. The first switch is a simple AF / MF switch, while the second switch is the Focus Limiter switch (0.8 m – Infinity) which helps accelerate focus acquisition. Additionally, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM has a bright maximum aperture of f/1.2.
Furthermore, this lens also introduces a new and somewhat unique rear lens cap. The design is different in some ways from the standard Canon EF rear lens cap. Usually, attaching the back lens cap requires only a little touch.
However, now, it is necessary to align the lens cap properly with the lens holder (a small indentation on the cap with a red dash on the lens holder), or the lid does not stick to the lens at all. This design does offer a tighter, more dust-resistant grip on the back of the lens, but it is also more awkward in its field.
