2018 has been such a busy year for Fuji. This Japanese camera manufacturer has released more models than any other manufacturer since the early 2018. And in this 3rd quarter of the year, it launches another model which this time, is aimed for compact camera market. Is this camera deserved to be considered? Let’s see the detail in Fujifilm XF10 Review below.
Fujifilm XF10 Review
With the mirrorless camera hype’s going around in nowadays market, confidently Fuji released a product that is segmented for compact camera market. Yes, even though the camera looks like mirrorless within Fujifilm XA series, but XF10 basically is a fixed-lens compact camera. This supposed to be the successor of the previous X70. So, can this camera fulfill your modern photography needs?
Fujifilm XF10 Design
As the successor of X70, the design of Fujifilm XF10 really looks like its predecessor. But, instead of following the exact design of the X70, this new compact camera is rather choosing simpler outlook. The aim of bringing this simplicity is obvious; to make the camera less-intimidating for the new user that’s just moved from smartphone camera to higher level of dedicated camera.
Bringing compact camera concept, the size of Fujifilm XF10 really fits well in hand. The dimension is 4.4 x 2.5 x 1.6 inches, or 112.5 x 64.4 x 41.0 mm. The use of compact fixed lens also helps the camera to maintain its weight to be only 279 grams with battery and memory card inside. Surely, carrying this camera will not be very burdening.
On the back side of the camera, you can find 3 inch LCD display with 1,040K-dot resolution. Just like X70, this LCD is touchscreen, and can be used to select the focus point by touching certain object within the frame. Unfortunately, the LCD is not tilting. So, even though the interface is pretty impressive, but no tilting screen means not that impressive for today’s standard. Around the LCD screen, there is quite an empty space. There is not much thing in this space as this camera wants to be as simple as possible. You can only see thumb grip and few buttons on the right side of the screen.
Moving to the top plate, you’ll notice few differences from the X70. Firstly, there is no pop up flash and hotshoe. Further, there is no aperture ring and the control scheme turns to be a bit different too. Adopting the similar system on X-E3, the new XF10 uses PASM dial in addition of touchscreen operation. Moreover, top plate is also filled with command dial, shutter release, and on/off button. Dials arrangement is simple so that using it will not be as complicated as using pro camera.
Fujifilm XF10 Specification
Even though it’s classified as compact camera, but the specification of Fujifilm XF10 is quite good. It has quite large 24 MP APS C sensor which is fitted into a compact body. For the lens, this camera is equipped with 18.5mm f/2.8 Fujinon optic. This lens is equivalent to 28mm on a 35mm format camera. This lens construction is very similar to the one on X70. It uses seven lens elements which are grouped into 5. There is a control ring on the front part as the only control on the front side of the camera.
Just like other recent Fuji’s products such as FujiFilm XT100 and Fujifilm XA-20, the new XF10 has been equipped with Bayer filter array and on-sensor PDAF pixels to result better images. In low light photography, you can employ wide range of ISO setting. The ISO itself ranges from 100 to 12,800. It can even be expanded to ISO 100 to ISO 51,200. Therefore, you don’t need to worry when shooting in low light. Burst mode is recorded to be 6.0 frames per second. And there’s still no further confirmation whether the camera can shoot in RAW or not.
Fujifilm XF10 Video Recording and Connectivity
In the video recording capability, the new XF10 is already able to record 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video with 15 fps, or 1080p in 24, 30, and 60 fps. Both 4K and 1080 video can be recorded for 30 minutes straight. Further, Fuji also equipped XF10 with high speed 720p video in 100 fps. In this format, you can also shoot 1.6x, 2x, 3.3x and 4x slow motion video in of 60, 50, 30 or 25 fps.
Realizing that Instagram is really such a thing now, Fujifilm XF10 also offers Square mode, where you can shoot square photo, following Instagram preferences that allow 1×1 photo format only. 11 Fujifilm Film Simulations are also provided to give a little artistic touch in the video footage. While for the image, it has Fuji’s 19 advanced filters.
For connectivity, you can choose either wired or wireless connectivity. In wired one, there are Micro-B USB 2.0 port which can be used for USB charging, 2.5mm external mic (yes, the camera has an external mic input as well), and a Micro (Type D) HDMI port. For storage, XF100 supports SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot. While in the wireless connectivity, you can use Bluetooth and WLAN. Battery USES Li-ion NP-95 battery, that’s claimed to be able to last for about 330 shots in one single charge.
Fujifilm XF10 price and Impression
Overall, this camera is a perfect match for beginner who just ready to moved from smartphone. But, for pro-user, we think there are many other options available. So, for you who want to afford this compact camera, you need to wait at least until August, when the Fujifilm XF100 will be available on the store shelf. There will be two colors offered; black and champagne gold. As for the price, it’s estimated that this camera will be offered in quite reasonable price which is around 500 USD with USB cable, AC adapter, lens cap, and hand strap included.
